Week 11

Posted Thu Dec 30, 2010 - 03:05 PM

These are the games that were played on December 17.

In the early game, the Omegas beat the Crusaders 5-3. Jordan DeBoer scored twice in the Crusaders' loss. Sid VanReenen, of the Omegas scored his first goal of the season, which turned out to be the game winner. Lance Ross scored a goal and added two assists for the Omegas.

The middle game saw the Hawks continue their hot streak by beating the Flyers 2-0. This win puts the Hawks ahead of the Flyers in the standings. The Hawks are now in second and the Flyers sit in third. For the second consecutive week, we'll give Mike Ward the nod for Player of the Week with his shut-out.

The late game also saw some jostling in the standings with the Cougars beating the Stars 6-3. The win gives the Cougars 8 points on the season, which ties them with the Stars. The Cougars actually are currently seeded ahead of the Stars because of more wins.

So, at the Christmas break, the standings are still very close.
The Omegas are comfortably in first place with 18 points. The other five teams are only separated by five points in the standings. The Hawks sit in second with 13 points, but the Flyers are only one point behind them with 12 points. The Crusaders are just two points behind the Flyers with 10 points, while the Cougars & Stars are only two points behind the Crusaders with 8 points each.
We've played 33 games in our season so far, and only five of these games had a goal differential of more than three. That's pretty good!

Every game the rest of the season should prove to be critical of which four teams make the playoffs.

Week 10

Posted Thu Dec 30, 2010 - 02:38 PM

These are the games that were played on December 10.

The early game between the Hawks & Stars was a very competetive game that felt like a playoff game. The Hawks came out on top by winning the game 3-1. Dave VanOostveen scored twice for the Hawks. Goaltenders Risser Wierenga & Mike Ward were outstanding for their respective teams in this game. We'll give Mike the Player of the Week honours for his effort.

On a personal note - I feel awful for temporarily destroying my brother Curt's beautiful face by breaking his front teeth. Don't panic, people, he's since got them fixed. We will be able to continue to enjoy his gorgeous pics in the "Curt Collection" section of the Image Gallery found on this very website. Even with his mangled face, he could still out-look the best of us.

In the middle game, the Cougars beat the Crusaders 7-3. Youngster, Brady DeBoer had a tough night in his first goaltending stint in our league, but he showed promise of being a future star in our league. Brad Sipkens & Steve Pastoor each scored twice in the Cougars' win.

The late game also saw the first goaltending stint for Kev Karelsen of the Flyers. After the first period, Kev had the quote of the week by saying "This is hard!". He wasn't kidding. The Omegas beat up on the Flyers to the tune of 10-3. Matt Zylstra, Zach VanReenen, & Kalen Hellinga each scored twice for the Omegas.

We'll give an "At-a-boy" to both Brady DeBoer & Kev Karelsen for their efforts on this night.

Week 9

Posted Thu Dec 30, 2010 - 02:05 PM

These are the games that were played on December 3.

In the early game, the Hawks beat the Cougars 4-3. Rob Nutma scored twice for the Hawks while Ryan Nutma & Dave VanOostveen each got a goal and an assist. Jeff Vanderdeen also got a goal and an assist for the Cougars.

The Omegas beat up on the Stars with a 6-3 win in the middle game. Greg Wierenga scored twice in the Stars' loss. Kalen Hellinga scored twice in for the Omegas, but the Player of the Week honours goes to Fred VanReenen Jr. for scoring a hat-trick, and adding an assist.

The late game saw the Crusaders lose another close one. This time to the Flyers, who scored the game winner with three minutes to go. Ryan Kreeft got two goals and two assists for the Flyers. Jordan DeBoer & Matt Tamminga each scored twice in the Crusaders' loss, while Matt added an assist on Jordan's second goal.

Week 8

Posted Thu Dec 30, 2010 - 01:29 PM

Okay, here we go. Finally I'm getting a chance to catch up a little bit. Week 8 is the games that were played on November 26.

In the early game the Cougars pulled out a 5-3 win over the Omegas. This was a very tight game all the way through until Chris Sipkens scored an empty-netter to seal the deal.

The middle game was also a very tight game between the Flyers & Stars. The Flyers held a two goal lead until the half way point of the third period. Brandon Wilpstra of the Stars scored to tie the game up with just under a minute left in the third. Matt VanMarum scored on a rare overtime penalty shot to win the game 5-4 for the Flyers.

The late game saw the Hawks beat the Crusaders 6-3. The score did not really show how close the game actually was. It was tied at three until Dave VanOostveen scored with two minutes to go in the third. The Hawks added two empty-netters in the last minute. We'll give the Player of the Week honours to Dave for scoring this critical goal.
