News for Sarnia Church Hockey League

Opening Night

Posted Fri Oct 08, 2010 - 12:44 PM

The season gets under way tonight at 8:00pm with the Omegas vs. the Crusaders.

Before we get started, it should be made known that Derek Deelstra has switched from the Hawks to play for the Stars instead. The co-operation shown by the Hawks has been appreciated in this matter.

I'll be stopping by each team's dressing room to hand out the roster sheets, schedules, & to collect money.

Ready?

The new season starts tomorrow night!

Last week we had a League meeting to get things in order for the season. Here's a few of the issues we discussed:

We decided to keep the season with a 20 game schedule. In order to keep the regular season from going on too long, we will be playing three times on Saturday nights. You will see these nights on our schedule.

The cost has gone up to $3500.00 / team in order to pay the bills.

We discussed the possibility of changing the regular season overtime to a shootout instead. We decided to keep the regular season format "as is".

It was brought to our attention that a team from Wallaceburg will likely be requesting for an opportunity to join our League next year as a seventh team. We will look into this further at the meeting at the end of this season.

We welcomed the following new players to our league:
Crusaders: Terry Soepboer, & Scott Park
Hawks: Derek Deelstra
Stars: Dallas Fraser, Pete Parke, & Matt Wagenaar
Omegas: Karsten Berg

We also welcomed back to our league: Ryan Cross to the Flyers and Will Marut to the Omegas.

Wesley Boelens has moved from the Hawks roster to play for the Crusaders this season.

The Hawks did not have a rep at the meeting and were not able to defend the League's decision to deny the approval of another player. The Hawks have since made an appeal of this decision and it will be investigated over the next few weeks. This player is not allowed to play until pending approval.

See you at the rink!

2010-11 Season

Posted Thu Sep 16, 2010 - 02:35 PM

Well, we're less than a month away from the first games of the season. We start the 2010-11 Season on October 8. We will be having a League Board Meeting on Thursday, September 30. At this meeting we'll be settling up the teams' rosters and discussing this year's schedule.

I have posted the schedule for the first five weeks. I've only done it up to this point because as a League, we need to decide if we want to play the full 20 game regular season, or shorten it to 15 games for this year.

Christmas Eve & New Year's Eve both fall on Fridays this year. As usual, we have to skip a week in January & a week in February for Silverstick Tournaments. I have also been informed that we won't be able to use the Point Edward Arena on one of the weeks in March because of a Figure Skating Competition.
Long story -short: If we play out 20 regular season games without scheduling extra ice-times, then our regular season will not end until March 25. Normally we are into the finals at this point.
If we were to shorten the regular season to 15 games this year, then the regular season would end on Feb.11.
The other option is for me to look into scheduling extra ice on a few Saturdays to speed up the 20 game regular season.

We need to come up with a decision on which way to go with the schedule at the Sept.30 meeting. If you have an opinion on this issue, please let your team's rep know before the meeting.

One more thing. We still need a Score Keeper for the season. Please let me know if you know of anybody interested.

New Scorekeeper Needed

Posted Fri Jun 11, 2010 - 05:54 AM

Hope everyone is enjoying the off-season.

Our Scorekeeper from the last four or five seasons (Kelsey Klazinga) will not be coming back, so we need to find a new scorekeeper for this up-coming season. The duties include running the score clock and filling out the game stats on the scoresheets. This needs to be done neatly and accurately. The League pays $50.00 / night for the regular season (8:00pm until midnight) and $20.00 / game for the playoffs.
Please send me an e-mail if you know of any candidates for this position.

Finals -Game 2

Congratulations to the Omegas for winning their second consecutive League Championship! This was the fifth time in the last eight years that the Omegas have won the Case Schouten Memorial Trophy.

The Omegas swept the final series by beating the Crusaders 6-3 in the game played on April 2. After a wild first period, the teams found themselves tied at 3-3. The Omegas scored twice on the power-play in the second period and never looked back. Joe VanReenen scored two goals and added two assists in the victory. Normally this would be enough of a performance to earn the Player of the Game honours, but the obvious choice for this was the Omegas' veteran Rick Anjema who stole the show by scoring four goals in the game. This matches Rick's entire regular season goal scoring total. Way to go, Rick!
