News for Sarnia Church Hockey League

Week 2

Posted Sat Oct 17, 2009 - 09:34 AM

I know it's early in the season, but it's great to see the parody in our league. Nobody can go into any game and expect to know what the outcome will be. All teams are now tied in the standings with 1 win and 1 loss each.

In the early game, the Cougars made up for last week by scoring 8 goals in an 8-5 victory over the Flyers. Jeff Vanderdeen and O.J. Deelstra each scored a hat-trick in the Cougars' victory. Ian Korvemaker helped out with 4 assists. Each of these 3 players deserves honourable mention for player of the week.

In the middle game, the Stars were able to kill off a ton of penalties to squeak out a 2-0 win over the Hawks. Risser Wierenga absolutely stole the game for the Stars, who essentially won the game 1-0, but added an empty netter with 8 seconds to go in the third. They always say that the goalie is your best penalty killer, and that was exactly the case in this situation. The Stars were successful in penalty killing for 18 consective minutes with a short bench. For his steller goaltending, Risser has been named the Player of the Week.

The late game also saw a ton of penalties being called, but all of them were called against the Crusaders. The Omegas were able to score twice on the powerplay with 10 chances to do so. Sid VanReenen scored 2 goals in the Omegas' 3-1 win over the Crusaders.

Week 1 is in the Books

It was great to see everyone out last night! We had what seemed to be quite a large crowd out to catch the opening night's games.

Everyone I spoke with was really impressed with the changes to the Point Edward Arena. The lighting is probably the most noticable improvement. The ice surface and boards are much better as well. One thing we did notice as players was that the players benches were pretty low and it was tough to jump the boards. (especially for us shorter dudes)

The early game was a great battle between last season's finalists. The Hawks came out on top with the score of 1-0 mostly due to an awesome goaltending performance from Mike Ward. For his efforts Mike earns himself the Player of the Week honours.

The middle game saw the Crusaders taking it to the Cougars 8-1. If it wasn't for Mike Ward's performance in the early game, it would've been a tough decision choosing the player of the week between the Crusaders' DeBoer boys. Steve DeBoer scored 2 goals and added 4 assists. Matt DeBoer got a goal and 4 assists. Jordan DeBoer scored a natural hat-trick and got 1 assist in his debut with the Crusaders. These 3 players all deserve honourable mention for player of the week.

In the late game the Flyers took advantage of an odd "use of an illegal stick" penalty by the Stars and scored the game winning goal. The score ended up 4-3 in a "back and fourth" game. A shout-out goes to the Stars' Ralph Huizinga who scored his first goal in the league since the late 80's.

Posted Fri Oct 02, 2009 - 02:09 PM

Only seven more sleeps! We will get the 2009-10 season going next Friday at the newly renovated Pt.Edward arena.

The 8:00 game will be a rematch of last season's final with the Omegas playing the Hawks. The 9:20 game will be the Crusaders vs. the Cougars. The Flyers will play against the Stars in the 10:40 game.

We had our League meeting last night and here are a few noteworthy items:
-WE WILL BE PLAYING GAMES ON JANUARY 1 as this season's schedule will run well into March before we start the playoffs.
-Cost for this season will once again be $3200.00/team. Each team will need to pay in four payments of $800.00 each. These payments are due: Oct.1, Nov.1, Dec.1, and Jan.1/2010.
-Rosters for the Stars, Flyers, Omegas, and Cougars were all approved.
The Hawks will follow up on more information about a new player (Jordan Nydam).
The approval of Jordan will depend on the information given.
The Crusaders' roster was approved except for Dayna Gould which is pending on each of the teams' consentual opinions on this issue. Each of the team reps has the information on this matter and is to discuss it with their teams. A ruling on this issue will follow once each of the teams views are known.

I will be handing out schedules next Friday before the games.
