Finals -Game 3

Congratulations go to the Flyers for winning the Championship with a 4-3 victory over the Omegas.

The Flyers got out to an early 3-0 lead with goals by Ryan Cross, Kev Karelsen, & Dan VanReenen. The Omegas got on the scoreboard with a goal by Lance Ross and went to the second period trailing 3-1.
Darryl Poort scored early in the second period to restore the Flyers' three goal lead. The Omegas got a jump again in the second period with goals by Luke VanReenen & Matt Zylstra. With these two quick goals, the Omegas sure put a scare on the Flyers, but the Flyers were able to hold the lead thanks to another strong performance by goaltender Rick Jones.
We'll give the nod for Player of the Game to Darryl Poort of the Flyers because of scoring what turned out to be the game winning goal and getting an assist on an earlier goal as well.

Finals -Game 2

Posted Mon Mar 21, 2011 - 01:22 PM

Game 2 on Saturday was another close one. Both teams exchanged chances throughout the first period, but it wasn't until the last minute of the first period, that Matt Kreeft put the Flyers on the scoreboard. The Omegas answered back in the beginning of the second period on a goal by rookie Luke VanReenen. The Omegas continued rolling with goals by Kalen Hellinga & Perrin Berg and finished off the second period with a 3-1 lead.
The Omegas looked like they had the game secured until Tyler Veenendaal brought the Flyers within one goal with 6:36 to go in the third period. This gave new life to the Flyers who poured it on for the rest of the game. With 3:52 to go in the third, the Flyers thought that they had tied the game up, but the referee waved it off, reasoning that the Flyers bumped the goalie. Obviously, the Flyers were not happy with the call, and put on a huge push to tie the game. Seth Hellinga held off the Flyers the rest of the way to lead the Omegas to a 3-2 win. Seth earns the Player of the Night honours for his efforts.

The third and deciding game will be Friday, March 25 @ 8:00pm at the Point Edward Arena.

Finals -Game 1

Posted Sat Mar 19, 2011 - 04:50 AM

I tell ya what - these playoffs so far have been great games to watch! Last night's first game of the finals was another one of those great games. Both teams had plenty of scoring chances and it was not neccessarily dominated by one team.
The Flyers got on the score sheet first with a power-play goal by Joel VanVeller. Kev Karelsen scored another goal for the Flyers half-way through the second period. At this point, the goalies took over the game and held the final score at 2-0 for the Flyers. Seth Hellinga made a bunch of good saves to hold the Flyers at two goals, but Rick Jones stole the show for the Flyers by shutting down the powerful Omegas with a handful of "highlight reel" saves. He earns the Player of the Night honours along with the shutout.

Game 2 goes tonight (Saturday, March 19) at 7:30pm at the Point Edward Arena. With a win tonight, the Flyers will take the Championship. The Omegas will look to tie up the series with a win tonight to keep their hopes of a "three-peat" alive.

Ejection

Posted Thu Mar 17, 2011 - 02:27 PM

Matt DeBoer of the Crusaders was ejected from the game on Saturday because he received three minor penalties. This was the second time that this has occurred for Matt this season, so he is okay to play in the first game of next season. Thank goodness for the "clean slate", eh Matt?
