If you missed the games this past Friday, shame on you! All three of the games were great games that came right down to the wire. The parody in our League this season is really starting to show.
The early game between the Flyers & Cattle Barons saw the Flyers squeak out a 6-4 win. The Cattle Barons got off to a quick start when Kevin Ryan scored his first goal in our league on his first shift. He followed that up with his second goal later in the period. By the end of the first period, the Cattle Barons looked comfortable with a 3-1 lead.
The second period was all Flyers thanks to two goals by Kev Karelsen. Joel VanVeller scored his second goal of the game late in the second to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead going in to the third.
When Ryan Cross scored early in the third and the Cattle Barons got into some penalty trouble, it looked like the Flyers were going to cruise to victory. Billy Freer of the Cattle Barons responded with his first goal in our league while his team was playing two men short-handed. This goal lifted the Cattle Barons' hopes again, but Ryan Cross sealed the victory for the Flyers with an empty net goal with a minute to go.
Kev Karelsen gets the nod for Player of the Game with his four point game.
The Ice Dogs suffered their first loss of the season in the middle game against the Omegas. This was another close game all the way through, but the Omegas pulled off a 5-4 win.
After a pretty quiet first period, the teams traded goals in the second and went into the third period all tied up at 3-3. After each team scored a goal in the third, it looked like we were bound for overtime. With 40 seconds to go in the third, Chad VanReenen blasted one in from the point and the Omegas held on to take the win.
Joe DeBoer of the Ice Dogs earned the Player of the Game honours with his four point performance.
The late game between the Hawks & Stars was yet again another great game. The Hawks came out on top with a 5-4 overtime victory.
The Stars got off to another slow start, going down 2-0 before they were able to put one by new Hawks' goaltender, Scott Solomon. By the end of the second, the teams found themselves deadlocked at 2-2. Jon Vanderlinde scored to give the Stars a brief lead, but Dave VanOostveen of the Hawks responded with his third goal of the game to tie it up again at 3-3. Things were looking good for the Stars when Curt Moesker scored his second goal of the game to put them up again 4-3.
Call him "Mr. Clutch" - Jake Huizinga, playing in his first game in our league, scored his first goal late in the third to tie it up yet again.
The teams each earned a point by taking it to overtime, but the Hawks erased the Stars' hopes of getting their first win of the season when Pat Dam scored the game winner early in overtime.
Dave VanOostveen is the Player of the Game by scoring a hat-trick and adding an assist on Pat Dam's game winner.
