In this week's early game, the Cougars beat the Stars 8-4. It was another game that the Stars kept close until their short bench caught up with them. The Stars were up 4-3 half-way through the third period until the Cougars stormed back with five third period goals. Curt Moesker gave a good effort in goal for the Stars. Risser Wierenga switched roles with Curt for the game and got three assists in the Stars' loss. Dale Moesker scored twice and Greg Wierenga also got three points. Chris Sipkens led the Cougars in their win by scoring a hat-trick. He is the winner of the Player of the Game. This week we had a number of strong individual efforts, so it was pretty tough to decide between them for the Player of the Week.
In the middle game, the Flyers showed that they have every intention of repeating as League Champs by beating the Omegas 6-4. Derek Bouma had a three point game for the Flyers, while his teammates, Kev Karelsen & Matt VanMarum each had four points. Kev & Matt are the co-winners of Player of the Game. With this victory, the Flyers have now clinched a playoff spot.
The late game saw the Hawks defeat the IceDogs by the score of 8-3. The IceDogs got off to a good start with a 2-0 lead, but the Hawks came storming back with six straight goals in the first period. Cam DeBoer scored twice in the IceDogs' loss. Matt Tamminga also had a good game offensively with three points. Kyle Huizinga got three assists in the Hawks' win, but the two co-winners of the Player of the Game are Devon DeBoer & Dave VanOostveen. Devon got two goals and two assists. Dave got five points in the game, including a hat-trick by the end of the first period.
A tip of the cap goes to all the guys on these two teams that still showed up for the game even after a hard week with the loss of Bill DeBoer. I counted 11 players between the two teams that were related to Bill in some way.
