Ejections

Posted Tue Oct 22, 2013 - 07:38 PM

Brett DeBoer & Joe DeBoer both had three minor penalties & were ejected from the IceDogs' game against the Cattle Barons. This is the first time that either of these guys has been ejected from a game this season for receiving three minor penalties, so they are both okay to play in the next game.

Week 3

Posted Tue Oct 22, 2013 - 07:30 PM

The Omegas got their first win of the season by beating the Stars 10-8 in the early game.
The Stars got off to a good start, thanks in large part to Tyler Poort, who scored a hat-trick in the first period. The Stars held a 4-2 lead after the first, but the Omegas came back in a big way in the second period. Jared Millberry led the Omega's in the second period by scoring a hat-trick of his own and gave the Omegas a 7-6 lead by the end of the period.
Both teams battled it out evenly through the third period until Lance Ross scored his third goal of the game into the empty net in the dying seconds of the game.
With such a high scoring game, there was a lot of guys who got a bunch of points. Brandon Wilpstra, Steve Zylstra, & Jeff VanderSlagt each got three points. Jason Hotke had four points for the Stars, while Chris Helps & Lance Ross each had five points. We'll give the nod for the Player of the Game to Jared Millberry & Tyler Poort, who each ended up scoring four goals for each of their teams.

The middle game between the IceDogs & Cattle Barons saw the Cattle Barons come away with a 8-7 overtime victory.
This was another back-and-forth type of a game. The IceDogs led 4-2 after the first period, but the Cattle Barons came back in the second period and held a 6-4 lead at the end of it. When all was said and done at the end of the third period, overtime was needed. The Cattle Barons put on a lot of pressure during a power-play that they had going into overtime. Just after the penalty expired, the Billy Sipkens snuck in the game winner for the Cattle Barons.
Matt Tamminga & Trevor Benjamins each had three points in the game, but the Player of the Game honours will be shared between O.J. Deelstra & Billy Sipkens, both of the Cattle Barons. Each of these guys ended the game with five points.

When the Flyers came out of the dressing room for the late game, they dazzled the crowd with their fancy new threads. However, it wasn't enough to dazzle the Hawks, who remain undefeated by beating the Flyers 7-5.
This was a battle between the two teams that had won both of their first two games of the season. It was another even game all the way through.
The Hawks held a slim lead throughout the game until the Flyers tied it up at 5-5 early in the third period. When Dave VanOostveen scored his third goal of the game into the empty net, he sealed the victory for the Hawks.
Dan Feenstra & Kev Karelsen will share the Player of the Game honours.

Week 2

The Hawks continued to build off of last season's championship by beating the IceDogs 4-2 in the early game.
After going down 2-0 by the end of the first period, the IceDogs came back to tie it up early in the third period at 2-2. The Hawks shut the door at this point and after scoring a couple more goals, came away with the win.
Aaron Boelens, of the Hawks, had three assists and earns the Player of the Game.

The Flyers definitely have the fire power so far this season. They showed this again in this week's middle game with a 10-3 win over the Omegas.
For the first half of the game, it looked like it was all Omegas. They had a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period and held that lead until half-way through the second period. That's when the Flyers took over. By the end of the period, the Flyers came back to tie the game at 3-3. Then they totally blew the doors off the game by scoring seven more goals in the third period.
Derek Bouma & Tyler Veenendaal each scored twice for the Flyers, while Tyler added an assist as well. We'll give Kev Karelsen the nod for Player of the Game in this one. He had four points in the game with two goals & two assists.

The Cattle Barons doubled up on the Stars in the late game with a 6-3 win. Chris Helps scored twice in the the Stars' loss. OJ Deelstra also scored twice for the Cattle Barons. Jeff Vanderdeen scored three goals for the Cattle Barons. Jeff will share the Player of the Game honours with Cattle Barons goaltender, Steve Pastoor, who always seems to step it up a notch against the Stars.

Week 1

Posted Mon Oct 07, 2013 - 05:47 PM

Well, the new season is off and running!

The early game was a re-match of last season's finalists. The Hawks continued where they left off last year by beating the Cattle Barons 8-3.
The first period was pretty quiet, with the Hawks holding a 1-0 lead going into the second. The second period is where the Hawks took control of the game by scoring five times. The Cattle Barons came back a bit in the latter half of the game, but it was too-little-too-late at that point.
Rob Nutma had three assists in the Hawks' win, but we'll give the Player of the Game honours to the duo of Ryan Nutma & Doug Boelens, both of the Hawks. They each scored four points. Doug had a goal & three assists, while Ryan scored a hat-trick & added an assist on Doug's goal.

The middle game between the Omegas & IceDogs was a much closer game and, fittingly, ended in a 4-4 tie.
It was somewhat of a back & forth type of game with the IceDogs getting off to a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Omegas owned the second period by scoring four straight goals & making it 4-2 by the end of the period. The third period switched back to the IceDogs' favour with Joe DeBoer scoring his third & fourth goals of the game to even it up at 4-4. The three minute overtime solved nothing, so each team came away with a point.
It wasn't hard picking the Player of the Game for this one. Since Joe DeBoer scored all four goals for the IceDogs, the choice is obvious.
Jared Millberry, of the Omegas scored his first goal in his first game in our League. And, unless I am mistaken, Steve Zylstra of the Omegas, also scored his first goal in his first game in our League.

The late game between the Flyers & Stars was not fun to be participating in if you were a goaltender. Both teams had plenty of fire-power and the score ended up 13-8 in favour of the Flyers.
The Flyers got off to a great start and held a 7-3 lead by the end of the first period. The Stars, who scored more goals in this game then they had scored in any game last season, kept up with the Flyers for the rest of the game, but the damage had already been done.
Terry Moesker, Jason Hotke, & Chris Helps each scored three points in the Stars' loss. Sid Karelsen & Ryan Cross both had three points for the Flyers. Darryl Poort & Joel VanVeller each scored a hat-trick and will share the Player of the Game honours with Matt VanMarum, who had a five point game. Dustin Bouma, of the Flyers, also deserves recognition for scoring his first goal in his first game in our League.
